Going along with our desire to eat healthier, more locally, and more self-sustainably, home beekeeping has popped up on our radar. Along with hosts of others, this is an attempt to move away from mass industrialization. Keeping small-scale colonies benefits more than just the beekeepers, by pollinating urban gardens. It's a growing trend, and many municipalities are new legalizing it. We're not sure if Downers Grove allows it -- for some reason I was sure it was not permitted, but could not find anything in our municipal code (though, unfortunately, I found that our lot is too small to allow us to raise chickens...). My father-in-law has kept bees in the past, and has said he would allow us to keep some hives on their property, which is great. We'll take lessons through the Dupage Forest Preserve, probably at Kline Creek Farm.
