2013 CrossFit Games - The Open Is Upon Us

2013 CrossFit Games Open 13.1

I haven't been thinking about the Open as a competition, mostly because there is no way I could be competitive. A part of me was petrified that I wouldn't be able to do ANY of the workouts, that I just wasn't ready. Last year the opening workout was 7 minutes of burpees - 7 MINUTES! I wondered what I had gotten myself into. Going to the box for WODs is one thing, posting failures for the world to see is quite another, Last night, Workout 13.1 was posted:

The CrossFit Games Open Workout 13.1:
  • 17 minute AMRAP of:
    • 40 Burpees
    • 30 Snatch, 75 / 45 lbs
    • 30 Burpees
    • 30 Snatch, 135 / 75 lbs
    • 20 Burpees
    • 30 Snatch, 165 / 100 lbs
    • 10 Burpees
    • Max rep Snatch, 210 / 120 lbs

My heart sank. With luck, I could get through the first round, maybe complete the second set of burpees. But snatch 135 pounds? Might as well suggest I run a sub-3 hour marathon - impossible. Something happened though. As the excitement on Facebook and Twitter grew, so did my resolve. Sure, I won't be standing on the podium and maybe, more likely than not, I'll be the last name on the leaderboard. And that's okay, because I'm not doing CrossFit do win accolades or be competitive with anyone, I'm doing it for myself, for my family, to be strong and fit and fast. Maybe I won't snatch 135 pounds, maybe I won't even get that far, but it won't be for lack of trying. And if I do get the opportunity to step up to that bar? Maybe, just maybe, I might surprise myself.

  1. I think it's awesome you are going for it. Totally out of the comfort zone stuff--good luck and enjoy it. (and omg--all those burpees!)

  2. Good luck! That sounds painful :-). Hey, happy belated birthday too Kovas!

  3. I stalked you online... Great job! I am signed up to "compete" but am being smart and only did 2 burpees. No point in extending my injury just to score a ~70 (if I got that far...)
