Many of us celebrate not just the winners, but all those who finish the IronMan. But what about those that don't officially "finish," but still complete the race? I got an email recently from Outside PR about one such person, Jeff Schmidt:
GU Energy president Tal Johnson was at the finish line in Kona late on the night of the race, watching them tear down the chute, when he saw a (literally) staggering site. The final competitor to come under the arch this year was Jeff Schmidt, an amputee who finished at 12:20 a.m., heralded not by Mike Reilly and thousands of spectators, but only a few volunteers and -- Pete Jacobs and Andrew Messick. Tal caught the scene with some video and this short essay [on Roctane.com] .
