Spartan Race

I think I've written about the Spartan Race in the past - looks brutal but fun. This adventure race might go on my 2013 race schedule. I'm participating in the Warrior Dash this summer with Laima, but this looks much tougher.

Anyone run this?
As tough as it looks?

  1. Given the Spartan's view on life, the only way you can properly honor their memory is by starting at the top of the triangle and doing the Death Race first. I'm sure that's what you are thinking too.

  2. Haven't heard of this one, but have been reading up on some adventure races while trying to recruit some friends for our semi-local Mud Run (Ultramax Sports about 45 min away). Will be curious to see how the Warrior Dash goes.

  3. I've got a perspective from the Canadian Spartan Race in Ottawa last year. The video seems to be a compliation of the different levels of racing. For us, the race took place in 40 degree (celcius) heat, no water stations on the course, on a ski resort (up and down ski hills). There was barbed wire, mud, water, climbing and burpees if you failed any task. The gladiators and jumping fire at the end. It is TOUGH, but was definitely fun, and you walk away with a great medal. If you are top in your heat, you move on with a free entry to the next event, up to the death race.

Good luck deciding whether to sign up!

  4. these mud-ish runs are so fun. i havent done any of the recent 'brands' that came out like these two, but i hvae done a mud/obstacle run. i know warrior dashes are usually 3-5 miles? there's one that's a half-marathon, i forget what the name of it is though.

  6. I did the Warrior Dash in 2009 and the Spartan Sprint in 2011, I'd say the Spartan Sprint is easily twice as tough on the body - possibly even more draining than a triathlon!

Both were great fun though :)

  7. I did the Wisconsin Warrior Dash and the Midwest Spartan Sprint in 2011. Both were in the 3-4 mile range. The Spartan Sprint was about 10x tougher. More difficult terrain and much tougher obtacles.

I'm signed up to do the Super Spartan (8-10 miles) this year. The Spartan races are more about strength than your normal mud runs. Lots of steep inclines, climbing walls and ropes, 400m belly crawl in the mud under barbed wire etc.

In training for a race like this I would seriously recommend Crossfit type training (i.e. lots of pushups, pullups, burpees etc.)

That being said I've never had more fun, been more challenged or been prouder of finishing a race in my life and that includes a marathon, a few half marathons and a Ragnar Relay.

I highly recommend giving at least a Spartan Sprint a try.

  9. My daughter's boyfriend did one in California and said it quickly became clear who had actually trained for it and who thought it was just a grade above a mud run obstacle course. Fortunately, he fell into the former category.
