PureFit Nutrition Bars

In training, as in real life, there are times when you need a quick nutritious snack. A bonus is when they taste good as well. Many of us turn to nutrition bars as a good way to limit calories yet fill ourselves up between meals. Some of those nutrition bars, however, are no better than a candy bar. PureFit Bars are different.

PureFit is based on two principles:
  1. Make the best, high-quality product possible. When you read the ingredients on the back of a PureFit wrapper, you can see what makes their bars so healthy: Simple, natural ingredients. Now, compare the ingredients to any other bar on the market — it’s a good bet you don’t even recognize half of the other bar’s ingredients. Because the nutrition bar industry is unregulated, PureFit set up high standards to create a healthy option.
  2. Give back to the community as much as possible. When PureFit was launched, they teamed up with City of Hope, to promote finding a cure for cancer and AIDS. Since then, they’ve promoted and supported many other charities. The last few years have been primarily focused on supporting groups and organizations that deal with fighting and raising awareness of Celiac disease.
As a further community outreach, there is PureFido: Millions of dogs and cats are euthanized each year because shelters can’t find homes for them. Rather than buying your next pet, PureFit encourages you to consider adopting from a shelter. Our dogs have been rescues, so this is something I would support as well.

PureFit bars ($34.35/box 15) do not contain dairy, wheat, gluten, artificial sweeteners, hydrogenated oils, or trans fats. They are 40/30/30 nutrition bars, which give you a balance of nutrients provides sustained energy, without the drastic changes in blood sugar. The entire line of PureFit Nutrition Bars is vegan and kosher. Check out this list of what they DON’T have:
  • NO Hydrogenated Oils
  • NO Animal Products - Vegan
  • NO Cholesterol or Trans Fatty Acids
  • NO Wheat or Gluten
  • NO Artificial Sweeteners
  • NO Hidden Carbohydrates
  • NO Sugar Alcohol
Nice.

What about taste? I assembled our crack team of tasters to give us the unalloyed truth. Here are some of their comments:
  • Peanut Butter Crunch - “Great, love it, tastes like peanut butter. Sweet.”
  • Almond Crunch - "Tastes sorta like the Granola Crunch. A little bit of crunch, almond extract flavor."
  • Chocolate Brownie - "Tastes almost like real brownies. Epic, my favorite. Chocolaty, not too sweet, little bit of crunch."
  • Granola Crunch - "Good. Awesome. Tastes like cashews. Sweet, maple syrup flavor."
  • Berry Almond Crunch - "Awesome, I like the flavor but not so much the texture. Strong flavor. My favorite. Very sweet, little bit of crunch, berry flavor."
I personally enjoyed the Almond Crunch Bar the most, but I am partial to almonds more than peanuts. None of the bars, including the Chocolate Brownie, were too sweet, which is a nice thing for a nutrition bar. I will mention that these bars are so dense, that you need to have some water after a few bites.

Improvements? 4 of the bars (excepting Chocolate Brownie) are uniform in color, though not in taste. I’m not sure how that could be changed, beyond adding some berry bits to fleck the Berry Almond Crunch Bar. This, of course, is a minor issue. Another improvement would be to source organic ingredients. Lastly, a bar without nuts could be developed for those with allergies. All niggling issues and minor improvements to a really great product.
