The Postman Always Rings Twice

When the doorbell rang last night and I spied the UPS truck at the base of the driveway, I hoped that there'd be a big box awaiting me when I opened the door. I was not disappointed. Courtesy of Pearl Izumi and Outside PR, I got a pair of the new Streak II running shoes (pictured) and a Infinity Innercool short sleeve running shirt. Of course I ran in the shoes this morning and really enjoyed them for the 40 minutes I was on the treadmill. Super light, super vented, these will be outstanding shoes for the hot days of summer. Completely awesome on the mill as well. Reviews forthcoming.

On Monday, I started using Optygen HP, which I requested from ProLine based on an endorsement from a formerly wimpy runner who managed to BQ, with much help from myself. Here's what celebrity spokesblogger and manly runner Chris K had to say about Optygen HP:

"I would never consider running an endurance race without first taking Optygen HP for at least 30 days prior to the event.   I had heard about the product early last year and decided to try it for a Marathon I ran last April.   In addition to being The King of Bonking, another issue that negatively affected me was having sore dead legs in the latter stages of a race or long training run.    My legs would feel like two cement pillars which made it hard to get into a groove.   While I did end up Bonking in my race last April, my legs  felt fine the whole way.

Fast forward to Super Bowl Sunday on Feb 6th, 2011.   30 days prior to the race, I took 4 Optygen HP pills every morning.    Again, during the latter part of the race, my legs felt great.  While I was still teetering on the brink of a big ol’ Bonk, my relatively fresh legs really helped me push through and retain my pace.   I accomplished my race goal to BQ am very sure that I would not have without the Optygen HP.    Of course there were many things that came together, but having legs that still felt alive was crucial.  Optygen HP is not “fuel”, you’ll still need your GU or whatever else you use, but I think the stuff if pretty amazing."

I'll try Optygen HP for 30 days, do some long runs, and report back regarding the efficacy of the product. Not only will you want to return for my opinion, but ProLine will also host a giveaway for a 30-day bottle of Optygen HP for one winner to try!

  1. Those shoes are sick, K! I love PI as a brand and have wonderful experience with everything but their running shoes (which I just haven't tried yet).

Also, are you sure that those aren't horse tranquilizers that Chris K. is taking?

  3. I'm not a big supplement guy, but I'll watch your progress, I'm always looking for something to make me more manly! Optygen HP already has one vote for me based on Chris' experience.

  7. Like Jim, I'm not much into supplements, but I am interested in hearing what you think of the optygen. I will need all the help I can get in June at Pac Crest.

  8. I'm like Jim--not a supplement person, but I'll be curious to hear what you have to say. Afterall, if it worked for manly runner...

I had the offer on the PI shoes. Since I am committing to minimalism, I actually turned them down (this was hard!). I did, however, get some rockin' clothing!

  9. Just started using Optygen HP myself. As you probably know I love First Endurance and think they make the best supps for endurance athletes. The EFS Liquid Shots and Ultragen are fantastic and I am hopeful Optygen is as well.

  10. Those shoes look awesome and certainly good for the treadmill. I don't think Optygen HP is available here in South Africa. We have some locally manufactured products that are very good and also a lot cheaper than the other products. Even Gu is very expensive here.

  11. How cool if Chris' pic could be on the bottle!!

I tend to use Ribose-D about 3 weeks before a marathon and Sport Legs after. I have had success with Beta-Alanine, too.

  12. I'm not a supplement person either...always a little cautious but I'm curious too. Speaking of supplements have you heard of Beta Alanine? I've heard of a few runners that take this before long runs/races...have not checked it out yet.
Wow, Amanda (Zippy), Way to be true to minimalism...you can tell them to send me the shoes instead...I promise I'll write a kickin' review that will make them want to keep sending me stuff! :) I need to find my blog voice so people will send me stuff too! ;)

  13. I agree with Jeff, the fuel product I use called Electorlyte Fuel Systms (EFS) is made by the same company as Optygen HP(1st Endurance). After trying many, it worked best for me.

  14. You know, I enjoy a visit from the postman twice in one day as long as he doesn't come to the back door.... that does get annoying...

  15. Shoes look great and if Optygen HP can do that I can't wait to see how it works for you. I might have to dabble in it quickly though since 70.3 IMCA is about 45 days away now.

  16. Those shoes look *awesome*.

I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on the pills. I've just recently started to hear people talk about them, but I'm really reluctant to take extra pills and such.

What a great day at the mailbox for you!

Is a 24 hour run - endurance worthy?!

  18. You are spoiled! Look at all the cool stuff you get. I hope one day I can be as cool as you :)

I started taking Beta Alanine (like Amanda mentioned) and I am sold! 100%. I will never run a marathon without it. My muscles did not even feel fatigued one bit. The only thing that hurt were my feet (due to blisters) and my neck and shoulders because they are so tight. I'm curious to hear about this stuff!

  19. I am a supplement person. I don't have a choice in the matter because of my crazy diet and I do believe I need them. I just received the liquid shots from EFS and I cannot wait to try it. I am looking forward to see what you will think of those suuplement and I am there for the giveaway!!!

  20. Those shoes look awesome. Because it's all about the looks.

  21. So, you would lose the life-based Biggest Loser? Is that what you're saying? Just because Chris is getting more attention that you these days doesn't mean you're a loser, per say.

  22. Looking forward to seeing your progress Kovas.

  23. Those supplements look very interesting. Can't wait to hear your review. Not that I don't believe the manly runner's endorsement...

And the shoes... how cool is it to have people send you stuff to check out? Pretty darn cool, if you ask me.

  24. interesting, I echo everyones comments above about Optygen HP. Good to hear that it worked for Chris K. I don't take any supplements either (use endurolyte tablets on long runs is the closest thing I can think of), but if it really does work maybe its worth a shot.

  25. Those look like cool shoes. Literally....cool & breezy.

  26. Love the look of those shoes! As for the supplements, I take enough real drugs for the asthma, so anything I don't have to take I tend to avoid. Still, I'm curious now...
