Constantin from Highball Blog shared a really cool website recently, where "an advertising agency created this game for an organization that helps needy people. The best social awareness interactive campaign I've seen so far: http://playspent.org/." The website allows you to make hypothetical choices facing a jobless or low income person, to get an idea of how difficult some people have it. SPENT was launched in February 2011 as a collaboration between McKinney and Urban Ministries of Durham. Learn more about UMD's mission at umdurham.org.
How do you begin a run from California to New York? With a single step (through the Magic Kingdom, no less!). Today, Dean Karnazes will run out the gates of Disneyland, bang a left, and head for New York City. The purpose of this event is to inspire the nation, and its youth, to get outside and become more physically active. He'll stop at schools along the way and give talks to kids about the importance of physical fitness and good diet. Other runners are invited to join him during the run. To learn more, visit: Run Across America.

I've got to try Spent. That sounds amazing; probably something everyone not in those shoes should experience. Enjoy your weekend in Michigan!

ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteI would call Spent eye-opening, but I've been there, so I guess it would be fact affirming? I don't know. Anyway, it's cool and everyone should both play it and help whatever local charity options you can!

Have a great weekend. And Dean isn't coming through my state...road trip? I'll see =)
ReplyDeleteHave you tried Spent yet? It really makes you realize how good you've got it when you see how difficult it is to live at the poverty line. I wish everyone was required to do this game, even for just a few days. We might find ourselves as a society to be more charitable. Thanks for highlighting it.
ReplyDeleteAlright, someone coming into our great State to spend some of their money!!! Glad to hear it. I'd love to run with Dean but he's not at a City close to me.
ReplyDeleteWow! I had not heard of that run Dean is doing (been out of the mix for a while). Very cool.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy MI!
I've been to Disneyland a few times....don't you take a right?
ReplyDeleteChris, it depends if you want to jump on the 5 or 57 freeway.
ReplyDeleteToo bad they couldn't get an athlete that your average school kid actually cares about.
Patrick, what other athlete with similar name recognition that could run across the country would you suggest?
ReplyDeleteFunny, I JUST got an email about Dean being in Phoenix. Unfortunately, I'll be out of town so I won't be able to catch up with him!
