| Tillamook = "The land of many waters" |
You might remember that I reviewed Gordon Edgar's Cheesemonger. Recently, I was sent a Tillamook Cheddar Cheese Gift Box for review, courtesy of Tillamook Cheese, which contained coupons for cheddar cheese, a heart-shaped sandwich cutter, and a cheese slicer. Farmer-owned since 1909, Tillamook makes cheese every day of the year, using a recipe that has been in use for 100 years! The cheese is made from primarily Jersey and Holstein cow milk, from farmers who avoid use of artificial growth hormones, delivered fresh daily. Tillamook medium cheddar won the gold medal in the medium cheddar category at the 2010 World Championship Cheese Contest held in Madison, Wisconsin, March 16-18. There were 59 entries from around the world competing for the title of best Medium Cheddar. Tillamook achieved a near perfect score of 99.6 points out of 100. An international panel of 30 experts from 12 nations judged the entries. The contest has been held on even-numbered years since 1958.
Tillamook cheddar has a nutty flavor, with a clean aftertaste, and has a smooth texture. While tasty straight out of the package, the cheese also melts well in an omelet or grilled cheese sandwich. We tried the medium and the sharp cheddars, though it's also available as smoked, white, or Peppered. Tillamook also makes a Monterey Jack, Colby, Mozzarella, and other cheeses, so there is probably something for all the cheese-lovers in your family. In a nice coincidence, Tillamook cheddar cheese was served at our neighborhood block party last month. It's really a cheese worth seeking out.
Want to try your own? Visit them in Tillamook, Oregon, where the Tillamook Cheese Factory Visitor's Center hosts more than a million guests each year. You can order or find a retailer near you online. Or, check out their publicity caravan, the Love Loaf Tour and find a Baby Loaf Bus in a city near you at http://www.loaflovetour.com/.
Or, you can be the lucky winner of your very own gift box, which will include coupons for cheese, a slicer, and the heart-shaped sandwich cutter. So many ways to enter!
