6 Commandments for Cyclists

Following on yesterday’s post, here are Lawrence Ulrich’s 6 commandments for cyclists:
  1. Don’t drink and ride. No brainer right? Turns out, in 2006, in 24% of fatal injuries, cyclists were legally impaired.
  2. Ride single file when possible.
  3. Use hand signals to indicate intentions.
  4. Make eye contact with drivers.
  5. Follow the law. This makes you completely part of the system, lessens conflict, and earns respect of drivers.
  6. Wear a helmet! 9 of 10 cyclists killed in 2008 were not wearing a helmet. Helmets can’t prevent accidents, but they might help you survive one.

  1. I'd like to add a #7 to the list since I see this first hand constantly and it drives me crazy...
DO NOT WEAR EARPHONES WHILE RIDING. YOU NEED ALL OF YOUR SENSES TO RIDE SAFELY.
Always nice to read these friendly reminders.

  2. Thanks KC! Absolutely earbuds are so dangerous. There are too many more to mention. One that drives me crazy personally is people who ride against the traffic - that's just begging to get hit or at the very least, irritate drivers.

  3. I like it and I agree with KC as well
